ABOUT US

Starlab Barcelona (https://www.starlab.es/) is an independent, private R&D SME that develops innovative sensor concepts as well as data and software products, both for Earth and Brain sensing in the Space and Neurotechnology sectors, two key areas for the 21st century with a common element: the increasing availability of streams of data, and of AI methodologies for its transformation in actionable information. Brain and body monitoring, and their applications to safety and medicine, is the main playground of the Neuroscience Business Unit, which has extensive experience in advanced data science, biomarker discovery, brain physiology and applied research for both institutional and industrial clients. The prototype multi-site transcranial current stimulator Starstim was developed and tested within the FET Open HIVE project framework. We also developed the original Enobio, a wireless, lightweight, comfortable electrophysiology sensor system for the recording of physiological signals, e.g. EEG, ECG through an earlier FP6 project SENSATION. Both are now commercialized through the Starlab spin-off Neuroelectrics, which constitutes a success case of technology transfer in the EU. The Neuroscience BU offers our customers in the Digital Health sector different EEG biomarkers for the characterization of emotional, and cognitive response. We offer its integration in Decision Support Systems (DSS) through the application of Machine Learning. This type of systems is gaining relevance in the pharma industry to improve the reproducibility of CNS-related results, and for decreasing CNS drug development costs through patient stratification and treatment response prediction. We have developed several applications in the Health industry for diagnosis and prognosis of autism, ADHD, and Parkinsons’. Starlab Space provides Earth Observation (EO) downstream information services aligned to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). We combine SAR, thermal and optical sensors´ signal processing with AI modeling techniques to create new customer tailored products. We turn complex satellite data into useful information to drive more competitive decision making and sustainable operations for our customers. We have in-house a portfolio of deep learning algorithms for target detection, segmentation, and classification of satellite imagery. Our portfolio includes environmental monitoring, agriculture and water management, forest fires monitoring, smart cities, construction, and urban development.

The Neuroscience Business Unit has extensive experience in brain stimulation and electrophysiology, advanced data analysis, and basic/applied research for both institutional and industrial clients. Starlab Neuroscience brings scientific rigor to the provision of neuroscience data analysis services to clinical and professional applications while leveraging medical grade hardware provided by our spin-off Neuroelectrics. Starlab Neuroscience capability is based on a unique combination of expertise in different stages of the data analysis pipeline from the signal acquisition through EEG signal processing to the final application of advanced machine learning techniques. Our methodological approach allows the evaluation and statistical validation of electrophysiological and neuroimaging biomarkers at subject individual level, which paves the path for its extensive application in clinical decision support systems for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring. Our biomarker discovery techniques have been developed for both spontaneous and event-related EEG protocols. The integration of the analytical framework in cloud repositories allows a smooth clinical trial data management as well as the automate report generation for giving a clear insight of results to our clients.
