Essay Competition 2025
The theme for this year’s essay competition call is “Cybersecurity for a Sovereign and Competitive Digital Europe” with the aim of promoting interest in subjects related to cybersecurity and careers in this field.
This essay competition on Cybersecurity aims at stimulating interest in cybersecurity-related topics and careers.
Through the call, DIGITAL SME is seeking essays analysing one of the following topics:
CYBER-ECONOMICS
Cybersecurity, Trust, and SME Competitiveness in the Digital Economy
- How can cybersecurity strengthen the economic resilience and market credibility of European SMEs?
Small and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of Europe’s digital economy, but to stay competitive, they must be seen as trustworthy and secure partners in the digital market. Essays may explore how cybersecurity incidents, such as product vulnerabilities or data breaches, can undermine the credibility and competitiveness of SMEs. Students are encouraged to reflect on how SMEs can build digital trust through strong cybersecurity practices and how cybersecurity can be turned from a cost into a competitive asset for SMEs operating in the European digital market.
CYBER-SKILLS
Bridging the Cybersecurity skills gap
- What are the main challenges in building a strong cybersecurity workforce today and how can SMEs become part of the solution?
The shortage of cybersecurity professionals is one of the key barriers to innovation and resilience for ICT SMEs in Europe. Essays may reflect on why SMEs in particular struggle to attract and retain cyber talent, and how this affects their ability to scale securely in a competitive digital landscape. Students are invited to explore not only systemic issues, such as education, training, or partnerships, but also on how SMEs themselves can become more attractive workplaces for cybersecurity professionals.
CYBER-DIPLOMACY
Cybersecurity and Digital Sovereignty
- What role can SMEs play in building Europe’s digital sovereignty through cybersecurity?
A secure and independent digital ecosystem is vital for Europe’s economic future, and SMEs are both key beneficiaries and contributors to this goal. Essay may examine how reliance on non-EU technologies and shifting geopolitical alliances influence European cybersecurity policies, and how these in turn affect SMEs. Students are encouraged to explore how SMEs can actively contribute to Europe’s digital sovereignty and how the EU can protect it while supporting open innovation and ensuring that SMEs can benefit from a secure, interoperable digital ecosystem.
