A new Focus Group on AI for Europe.

Together with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), European DIGITAL SME Alliance has launched a Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The JRC is monitoring the development, uptake and impact of AI in Europe as foreseen in the EU Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence adopted in December 2018 via AI WATCH . As part of its role, the JRC is seeking close feedback from AI intensive companies to monitor the adoption of AI technologies in relation with the impact of EU initiatives on the topic.

What is the aim of the Joint Focus Group on AI? The Joint Focus Group on AI will help DIGITAL SME and the JRC to understand the adoption, use, and impacts over time of AI and related technologies (robotics, automation in general, machine learning, etc.). The Focus Group will work together to define the current state of adoption and use of AI, and to follow over the next 3 to 5 years how and what changes through the introduction of tools linked to AI (for example how management change and data integration, production, support or management processes), and the social and economic impacts of these changes (e.g. skills, recruitment, employers-workers relations).

Who can join? SME who focus on providing AI solutions or who are intensive AI users from across European can join this group. We are aiming to form a pool of companies that will form a network of AI innovators in Europe over a 3 to 5 year period. Member would be expected to take part in 1-2 meetings of the Focus Group per year.

Benefits of participation:

  • Visibility at the European level
  • Become part of a European group of AI innovators and receive updates on events and policy developments at the EU level!
  • Addressing the European Commission directly with experiences, problems and critical issues. If the feedback is confirmed by other European peers, this could lead to new beneficial policy initiatives like research tools, funds, regulations or guidelines.
  • (Travel and accommodation will be covered – this may be applicable again in the future)

Timeline:

  • October 2020 – Launch of open call to join Focus Group on AI
  • 9 & 10 November 2020 – Second Focus Group Meeting
  • The focus group will run for approximately 3 to 5 years and meet 2 times per year (online or in person)

The European Commission and DIGITAL SME will select approximately 100 SMEs to take part in the Focus Group on AI. Please do not hesitate to address any questions to Ms. Annika Linck (a.linck@digitalsme.eu).
