Skills for Smart Communities – Empowering the Workforce for a Digital and Sustainable Future
The transition toward smart communities requires more than just technological innovation. It demands a workforce equipped with the necessary digital and transversal skills to design, implement, and manage these advanced systems. Public authorities play a pivotal role in this transformation, not only as policymakers but also as facilitators of digital adoption within their jurisdictions. However, many public administrations face significant skill gaps that hinder their ability to fully embrace smart technologies and foster sustainable, inclusive development.
Within the kick-off of SMARt COmmunities’ Skills Development in Europe (SMARCO) blueprint project, this panel discussion sought to address the urgent need for upskilling and reskilling the workforce, with a particular focus on public procurers and smart engineers. Developing the necessary expertise is critical for ensuring that smart community initiatives are both innovative and equitable.
By bringing together experts, policymakers, and practitioners, this event aimed to foster a collaborative exchange of ideas and solutions, ensuring that public authorities are not just participants but leaders in the smart community revolution. The contributions provided real-world examples of collaborative approaches and frameworks that empower local authorities to implement and scale smart community initiatives effectively.
The session focused on:
- Core Competencies for Smart Communities: Exploring the technical, digital, and transversal skills needed to align with the green and digital transitions.
- Bridging the Skills Gap: Strategies to address disparities in skills between urban and rural areas, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital revolution.
- Best Practices and Initiatives: Showcasing successful workforce development programs and tools, which provide actionable solutions for public authorities.
