PUZZLE helps SMEs & Micro Enterprises monitor risks to their digital security, privacy, and data protection, by analysing your systems with our online platform, the PUZZLE. The PUZZLE uses AI data processing to deliver insights and threat intelligence reports so that you are always aware of your risk level.
PUZZLE builds resilience into your systems by offering cybersecurity management services to mitigate the impact of an attack. This means that, when something goes wrong - PUZZLE is there for you.
Project Duration: 36 months
Project Start: September 2020
The PUZZLE framework will help audit the cyber assets of the user SME and Micro Enterprises, evaluating their digital infrastructure to check for cyber risks, at multiple levels. Based upon this evaluation, PUZZLE will recommend and apply mitigation actions to tackle identified threats and vulnerabilities.
The PUZZLE framework will help support this evaluation it’s through enabling data collection and analysis from the various SME’s and MEs that use the system. The collection will take place through secure resource management and monitoring agents, that will be hosted and applied via the PUZZLE infrastructure. This data, once it has been examined for cybersecurity incidents, can be combined with already existing knowledge from other data sources, to provide an enriched threat picture and better intelligence for mitigating against attacks.
This intelligence picture will be further enhanced by knowledge sharing among the users, handled securely via the blockchain technologies (distributed ledger technologies?). This data will be subjected to machine learning techniques that will provide advanced risk analysis and assessments, as well as an early warning mechanism for potential vulnerabilities. Based upon these reports, the PUZZLE will be able to recommend defensive strategies for users, by implementing the cybersecurity services offered via the PUZZLE marketplace. The PUZZLE will also offer automated or semi-automated defensive responsive mechanisms, greatly reducing the complexity and burden of reacting to threats and breaches for security officers.
A range of services will be available through the platform, allowing users to easily manage multiple threats, risks and attacks. Through the easy-to-use interface and reporting, companies will develop greater situational awareness regarding their vulnerabilities and increased resilience by adopting new solutions. These cybersecurity solutions will enhance the attractiveness of the PUZZLE marketplace, as they can be easily onboarded by external cybersecurity providers and seamlessly integrated by end users into their systems.
WP1 – Architectural Design and Conceptualization: This WP will analyse the general requirements and properties of PUZZLE.
WP2 – Multi Dependancy Cyber Threats Data Modeling and Risk Assessment: The main scope of WP2 is to define, design and implement the Continuous Cyber Risk Assessment mechanism of the PUZZLE Cybersecurity Situation Awareness layer.
WP3 – Cybersecurity Management and Provision Services: The main objectives of WP3 include the design and development of the set of cybersecurity management and provision services that are going to be made available in the PUZZLE Marketplace.
WP4 – Cybersecurity Services Marketplace and Deployment Mechanisms: The main objectives of WP4 include the design and development of the PUZZLE cybersecurity services marketplace and the policy-based deployment recommender and deployment manager.
WP5 – PUZZLE Framework Integration: The main objectives of WP5 include the integration, testing and refinement of PUZZLE framework.
WP6 – Real-life Industrial and Operational Demonstrators: The purpose of this WP is to apply the services enabled by the PUZZLE Marketplace (WP1) in various demonstrators and in the Innovation Contest to assess its architectural soundness, technical excellence and business value.
WP7 – Dissemination, Communication, Exploitation and Business Continuity: The main objective of WP7 is to raise awareness of the project amongst the industrial and research community and to embody the results of the project in standardization, achieving wide communication and scientific dissemination of the innovative project results.
WP8 – Project Management and Consortium Coordination: The main objective of WP8 is the financial and administrative coordination as well as the technical coordination, quality assurance and risk management of the project.

DIGITAL SME tasks:
- WP1: DIGITAL SME will contribute to the Data Chain for SMEs&MEs, targeting the Services and Open APIs Definition, which is based upon the PUZZLE framework conceptual architecture design. In the frame of this task, the PUZZLE Open APIs will be developed, providing access to third parties to selected features of the PUZZLE framework and provided services.
- WP2: DIGITAL SME will prepare the training manual with regard to cybersecurity technologies adoption, techniques and mechanisms for cyber situation awareness and control, as well as to security professionals’ manuals of the PUZZLE Marketplace and its services – to be utilized by start-ups, SMEs&MEs selected by the Innovation Contest, which DIGITAL SME will help to promote in the SME community, through the creation of an outreach hub and organisation of innovation workshops.
- WP7: DSME is managing the task related to Exploitation, IPR handling and Innovation Management, helping the project to track and maximise the value that is created through the research and improve each partners competitive advantage.
- WP8: contribution to quality management, project reporting.
Member benefits: access to the training manuals and participation in the Outreach Hubs, including access to the Innovation Contest and advice on applying. Early adoption of a holistic cybersecurity system.
