The European federation of Data Driven Innovation Hubs (EUHubs4Data) project aims to consolidate as the European reference for data driven innovation and experimentation, fostering collaboration between data driven initiatives in Europe, federating solutions in a global common catalogue of data services, and sharing data in a cross-border and cross-sector basis.

There are around 190 DIHs in Europe (out of around 400) specialized in Data mining, Big Data, and database management. However, in order to fully exploit the benefits that the different DIHs are bringing to the industry, one step beyond in the collaboration among those initiatives and towards a network of Big Data DIHs is necessary. The project will contribute to this objective by linking and establishing collaboration among existing initiatives in the domain of Big Data. It will:
- lay the foundations for a pan-European federation of Big Data DIHs,
- establish links and alignments with existing similar networks in other domains,
- leverage other past and present actions that have contributed to foster data driven innovation in Europe, such as data incubators, European projects, initiatives around open data, and on data skills and training,
- attract, support and engage end users from the local and regional ecosystems through a common European catalogue of federated datasets and services.
The main outcome of the project will be a global catalogue of federated data driven services that will aggregate the individual offers, and that will be made accessible at regional and local levels by the corresponding DIHs. This catalogue will also include relevant European datasets coming from different data sources, with different level of information depending on the availability and accessibility of the data.
This federation will be initially composed of the 10 DIHs coordinated by the BDVA i-Spaces, but will be open to the incorporation of more DIHs during the execution of the project that will complement the initial offer and increase the geographical coverage as well.
Project Structure:
WP1 – Federation of Big Data Innovation Hubs will address all aspects needed for the establishment of the federation, and its operational processes, including growth, evolution, and sustainability.
WP2 – Expanding the ecosystem will bring together relevant European initiatives that will support the federation in the objective of fostering data driven innovation, and bringing it closer to industry and society.
WP3 – Ethical and legal aspects will provide advice to carry out all activities within the project according to the ethical guidelines issued by the EC, and to the regulatory frameworks that apply in each case.
WP4 – Toolkit for federated data driven services will produce a federated catalogue that will aggregate services provided by the DIHs, but also coming from other European initiatives, and will make them available to SMEs and start-ups at regional level.
WP5 – Federation of data sources and datasets aims at identifying and cataloguing existing and relevant data sources and datasets, coming from the ecosystems and data platforms of the DIHs, but also linking with other European initiatives, offering a single access point to a common data space.
WP6 – Open calls management will implement all the needed mechanisms to select the most relevant and challenging experiments through three rounds of open calls.
WP7 – Cross-border data innovation programme will support, monitor, track and exploit results of the experiments selected through the different open calls.
WP8 – Training and skills define and implement a common training programme that will complement the service offering of the federation, including both internal and external training to the different stakeholders of the ecosystem.
WP9 – Impact, outreach and dissemination will include all actions to raise awareness about the federation and its activities, promote the open calls, and maximize the potential impact of the work carried out within the project.
WP10 – Coordination and management will ensure the smooth operation of the project in terms of scope, schedule, costs, quality, risks, internal communication and reporting.
DIGITAL SME tasks:
- WP2: contribution to Management and assessment of the ecosystem. This task will provide a general framework of collaboration for the different stakeholders, identify strategic alliances with other initiatives (and related stakeholders) in Europe and will define a scalable model to amplify the impact and outreach of the federation and its activities.
- WP2: lead of the Task 2.2 Expanding the demand side: SME outreach program. Deliverable: SME Outreach Programme report (M18, M36). Within this task, we will have to coordinate participation in SME related events (all members’ participation), organise SME Roadshow, collaborate with other initiatives.
- WP2: contribute to overall community building.
- WP6: contribution to preparatory tasks and launch of open calls by promoting the Open Calls.
- WP8: contribution to the definition and implementation of the training programme for SMEs.
- WP9: contribution to definition and implementation of communication strategy and activities.
- WP10: contribution to quality management, project reporting.
