WIFI4EU – Free WiFi connections across Europe’s public spaces

In his 2016 State of the Union address, President Juncker’s announced the Commission’s plan to provide European cities and local communities with free WiFi connections.

The initiative called WIFI4EU comprises an investment of €120 million to promote access to wireless connectivity in public places.

Free WiFi would then be available in parks, squares, libraries, public buildings to benefit citizens and institutions with a public mission.

The Commission will provide vouchers to cover the expenses of setting up wi-fi connections in local communities. Public bodies shall pay the monthly subscriptions. Up to 8.000 local communities will be targeted by this initiative.
